Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Kabir Singh’ defeats Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to emerge as 2019’s most searched films on Google
Shahid Kapoor’s film Kabir Singh has become the most searched film of 2019, as Google India announced. The film was included in the list of Google India’s end of the year review feature. It defeated Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame to take the first spot in the most searched film list of 2019. The film also starred Kiara Advani in the lead and was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga who had helmed the original Telugu version starring Vijay Deverakonda as well.
Kabir Singh minted money at the box office irrespective of garnering negative reviews from critics and several controversies. The film was panned by many for glorifying violence against women, sexism and misogyny. However, it went on collect a whopping Rs 380 crore at the box office making it Shahid’s most successful film. On the other hand, Avengers: Endgame is the year’s highest-grossing film in India and worldwide having made over Rs 450 crore in the country.
This year’s list showed a pleasant surprise as three out of the top five most searched films happen to be Hollywood imports. Kabir Singh and Avengers: Endgame was followed by Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30. Joker is the first R-rated film to become a runaway hit worldwide and is a frontrunner at this year’s Oscars. Joker, as well as Captain Marvel, made over a billion dollars worldwide while Super 30 was a comeback of sorts of Hrithik at the box office. He had another hit on his hands in the form of War which took the eighth spot.
Akshay Kumar’s Mission Mangal was pegged at number six whereas India’s official entry to Oscars Ranveer Singh’s and Alia Bhatt’s Gully Boy was placed seventh. Akshay’s Housefull 4 was at the ninth place while Vicky Kaushal’s National Award-winning film URI: The Surgical Strike came in at tenth.
