Excerpts from the interview:

You have styled a lot of A-list Bollywood divas such as Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor, Tara Sutaria, Disha Patani, Nora Fatehi amongst many others. How do you manage to bring out a distinct flavor for each of these actresses?

So with each person who I style, I think the first factor is their personality and how they want to portray themselves- how they want to look for the occasion and the second would be their body type and how to accentuate it and make them look the best. So I think with each person everyone has something unique about themselves with their personality, their body type and then I kind of use that to my advantage and I find them the perfect outfit.

What is generally the mood board while styling each of these ladies?

I think the mood board with styling anybody would first be where they are going and what is appropriate to wear to that occasion. From there we figure out what they have worn in the recent past so that they don’t kind of look the same as before. We reference for something fresh and something that will be different for them every time.

Tara Sutaria's promotional style transformed from a girl next door to an absolute glam grenade, all thanks to your styling. How did this transformation happen?

I think Tara’s style has transformed very seamlessly. She has stayed true to what she considers her aesthetic and experimented further and made a breakthrough with her style. I think her transformation happened over time. When a stylist and a celebrity are in sync with what they consider to be fashionable and have that space to explore the new territory, I think it’s a great place to be and we were able to do that with Tadap’s promotions.

You grabbed a lot of limelight with your impeccable art while styling Tara Sutaria for Tadap and Heropanti 2 promotions. What went behind the curation of these stunning looks? Did you stick to any particular theme?

No there was no particular theme in mind. We knew it was going to be our first promotion together so I did a lot of research into new, young designers who are fresh, making really good collections, making great silhouettes, using great fabrics and I reached out to these people who shared the same vision as me. I was really happy how it turned out because I felt like there was freshness with each look and that’s really what I aimed to do and Tara being Tara, pulled everything off so effortlessly and you can’t ask for more than that.

Ananya and Tara both made their debut in the same year with the same film and both are styled by you as well. How would you describe both the actresses’ personal styles? How is their style statement different from each other?

I have worked with both of them on Student of the Year 2. I was in Manish Malhotra’s team for SOTY 2 and I was working on both Ananya and Tara’s costumes back then. So I actually know them since their first day of shoot of their first film so they are really, really special to me. I think with Ananya, her style is a little quirkier whereas Tara's is more classic. That’s a major difference. Tara has more of a neutral palette whereas Ananya is more bright and colourful. They both have such different personalities and aesthetics that work beautifully for both of them.

Sonam, Disha, Janhvi, Ananya, Nora or Tara- who is more experimental when it comes to styling?

All of them are open to experimentation but I would say that Sonam is the most experimental.

Do you and your muses have the same style opinion? Do they provide their style input as well?

Yes, we definitely have the same style opinion most of the time. I always ask every person I work with their opinion as I believe styling is a collaborative effort because it’s your aesthetic mixed with theirs and their ability to carry things off. It’s so important that they enjoy what they wear because it's fashion at the end of the day and shouldn’t be taken so seriously. Everyone should have fun and be comfortable and feel good in what they wear. So, it’s important for everyone to be on the same page with the styles they want to go ahead with. So I always ask for everyone’s input, value everybody’s input and I hope that it always stays like that.

How would you describe your personal style? Does your personal style reflect while styling these celebs as well?

My personal style would be sporty, a little bit vintage and edgy. I am not so feminine in my dressing whereas some of my clients are. I do think that my aesthetic lends a hand in the output of my styling but my personal style is not the same as the people I dress. I think you will find some elements of it. For example, if I wear a dress with boots, someone I style would probably wear the same dress way better with stilettoes and that’s totally fine. I think everyone should be styled in a way that looks effortless and comfortable. So my personal style is very different but I don’t think that really affects how I put looks together.

If given a chance, which Hollywood celebrity would you love to style?

Rihanna for sure. Hands down. She is my style icon. If I ever got the chance to work in her team, I would just die. I also love Zendaya’s style and I love Millie Bobby Brown as well.

Do you take inspiration from international stylists and celebs to create some of your looks? If yes, then who?

Of course, there are many stylists whose work I look up to in the West. I do look up to Law Roach, he is Zendaya’s stylist and he styles Celine Dion and Priyanka Chopra Jonas now and his work is beyond anything that I can put into words because he will dig up clothes from the vintage archives and you can really see the love for just fashion and its history through his work and I think that’s really inspiring. Somebody else I love is Mel Ottenberg. He is Rihanna’s stylist. Again, he does a lot of vintage in his work and that to me that is really special because fashion is not about just putting out what comes out every year, what’s the new season. Fashion can be something that was done even a decade ago but still is as valued as anything as that comes out today and as beautiful and timeless. These two of them are my favourite and I love them a lot.

One Bollywood celebrity you would love to work with in the future?

It’s always been a dream of mine to work with Alia Bhatt. So I hope that happens someday.

Are you open to styling B-town boys as well? If yes, which actor would you like to start with?

Of course, I am open to styling B-town boys. I think that for me personally I find women’s wear way more fun, I enjoy the details of it. But if I were to start styling men I think I would start with Fawad Khan. He doesn’t even live here anymore but I would love to work with him.

A fictional character whose style you love the most.

So I can’t really shortlist just one but I am obsessed with what all the kids in Sex Education are wearing. I am obsessed with this young, high school sort of vintage style and I think it’s really cool.
