Netflix also announced a sixth and final season of the series on social media. The news of the final season comes a month after reports that Ellis had closed a deal to return as the titular character for a sixth season. Reportedly, Netflix started talks with the series producer Warner Bros.TV ahead of its fifth season premiere. Executive producers Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson closed new deals for the sixth and final season.

The show follows Lucifer (Ellis) who is bored as the Lord of Hell. He resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for Los Angeles, where he starts helping the LAPD - specifically detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German).
